Winter Clean Part 1 – Done!!!

It has taken 8 weeks but the House has been put to bed!  All the furniture and other objects in the collection have been cleaned, inspected and put under dust covers, acid free tissue or Tyvek ‘hats’.  Some of furniture have new dust covers this year, that have been individually made to measure for each piece.  Some of our tables have very large and heavy objects on that we don’t like to move if we don’t have to, so we clean and put them to bed in-situ.  With this in mind our fabulous volunteer, Kristine, made covers that would fit around the objects, but cover up the delicate gilded areas of the table legs.

The Ballroom was our last room to complete.  Most things in this room are fairly straight forward, even the enormous candelabra which come apart into many pieces, once we realised last year all the pieces are actually numbered it’s quite easy putting them back together now.  A couple of the last pieces of furniture left to dust were discovered to have mould growing inside the drawers, so these took a little longer to clean.

This week has mostly been spent tidying away equipment, servicing vacuum cleaners, doing stock takes and the last of this year’s pest insect trap checks; then we’re off for our Christmas hols and back on he 3rd January.

The New Year will see the team begin the second part of the winter clean, returning to each room in turn and dusting the rooms, fixtures and fittings from ceiling to floor.  We will be extra busy this January and February as we make preparations to the rooms and collection on the East front for building work that will begin in April.  Watch this space and we’ll tell you all about it.

Our last team member, Emma, our Curator, has posted her profile on the ‘Meet the Team’ page.
